PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS AT THE CENTRE DE L'ÉTOILE

As part of its Human Rights Photography Award 2016, the Act on Your Future Foundation wished to give voice to unaccompanied minor asylum-seekers of accommodation centre “Etoile-Praille” in Geneva as the prize focused on the topic of « immigration to asylum ».

In collaboration with Les Hybrides, an association from Lausanne, we organised cultural mediation workshops around photography, as a means of artistic expression. The aim of this common project was to offer these young people an opportunity of expression on their daily life and their main interests, while also enabling them to develop their creativity. A mediation activity adapted to their path and their sensitivity seemed to be the best means to introduce this young public to photography, and thus to bring attention on their reception conditions in Geneva.

Professional photographers, laureates of the Human Rights Photography Award 2015, have mentored the young people and shared their passion for photography.

PUBLICATION

A book presenting their photographs taken with their smartphones has been published with the objective of sensitizing the general public to the issue of refugees, offering a local and more human perspective to the issue.

Over two months, these workshops have brought together a dozen of young people of the Centre. They have participated in the various stages of the project - from the initial photographic shots to the selection and editing of the images in the publication.

The publication was presented during the award ceremony of the 2016 prize with the presence of the young minors of the Centre.
