Finalist 2018

Mariano Bocanegra

Mariano Bocanegra was born in Argentina in 1989. After an international research and creation residency at the ENSP, he is currently pursuing a Masters at this institution. Passionate about photography since his 17 years, he seeks to bring a reflection on the genre and the metamorphosis of the body using different artistic mediums.

Boys Don't Cry, 2018

One day I left my house without knowing that I would not come back until two months later.

This project comes after the assault on me while kissing another man. I was immobilized for two months in a clinic. During this period, my phone was the only link to the outside world and the only photographic tool I had at my disposal. These images arise with notes, like a diary. The images, taken with a mobile application, refer to a new trend in photographs shared on social networks, whose filters reflect the aesthetics of films from the 1990s.

1990 is the date when homosexuality was removed from the list of mental illnesses by the World Health Organization. Twenty-eight years later, kissing a person of the same sex in public is a political gesture.
