INTEGRATION: STORIES IN PICTURES (IRIS)
May it from the media or from politics, the storytelling of migration is rarely made by the first-concerned, the exiles. His impact on the society in which he arrived is mostly put forward. Too little importance is given to his experience and to his integration journey. Deprived from his own story, the exile becomes a spectator of what the others do with it.
The project "Integration: stories in pictures" (IRIS) aims to return their stories back to the migrants. If we gave them the adequate tools to speak out, what would they say and how would they say it ? Finally masters of their narratives, economic migrants, asylum seekers or political refugees tell us their stories.
DEVELOPMENT
The project wishes to bring a new perspective of migration. By giving modern narration tools to the exiles, it oversturns the hirarchy and reintegrates the lead actor at the core of the story's construction. The final result is a series of short films directed and imagined by the exiles themselves. The films were shown at the Festival du Film et Forum International sur les Droits Humains (FIFDH) in march 2018 in Geneva.
To fulfill this objective, the participants followed an accelerated filmmaking training. For two months, they acquired as much knowledge as the could to create their films. Free to tell their stories their way, the spirit was creative and recreational. Basic tool: their mobile phones. Basic material: their everyday life. Those authentic short films gave a human and local point of view. Along with the project, movie-theater clubs were offered to the migrants of our partner shelters.
In the continuation of the RNMA photography workshops organised at the Centre Etoile-Praille in 2016, IRIS uses pictures as a universal language. Our wish is to offer innovatice cultural projects with the ambition of renewing our opinion of the migration community and to facilitate its integration in Geneva.
PEDAGOGICAL OBJECTIVES
IRIS aims to transmit new skills and new Tools to the participants. By producing a short film, they acquired theoretical and practical knowledge linked to the worlds of cinema and the audiovisual sector.
From a practical point of view, the participants followed a training course which taught them the basics of shooting, sound recording and Editing. The have hence received a better understanding of the production process of video content. The participants followe dlessons of storytelling, which would give them the necessary Tools to link images and words to a story. But what is the point of telling your own story? Who is in the best position to talk about it? How can we reinterpret our narrative? The project seeks to raise those questions not only within the participants, but also among the audience who attended the screenings.
TARGET AUDIENCE
The project adresses young adults from a migration background, women and men, aged between 18 and 45 years, welcomed by collective shelters or accompanied by social institutions from the City of Geneva.
